Strategies for individual development

Building resilience requires constructive interventions, and Rutter (2000, 673) argues for policies and practices that help children to acquire coping skills during childhood and beyond. He suggests that ‘there needs to be a shift from a view that temperamental features are just within-the-person characteristics to an appreciation that much of their importance lies in their effects on interpersonal interactions’. Children, he argues, need to be helped to build and use personal qualities and resources in ways that are socially positive and personally constructive. Person-focused strategies include the following:

• Social adaptive behaviours

• Emotional regulation.
